Robert Shrimsley’s analysis is astute (“Tory culture war is fight for a new establishment”, Opinion, July 15). For the left, Antonio Gramsci’s “long march through the institutions” is close to achieving its ambition of subverting liberal democracy without recourse to arms. If it is to be achieved, the work to create a new, more tolerant establishment will be arduous. To assist, those of us who have the privilege to work in great British universities must recall the advice often attributed to Edmund Burke that “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.
